Petra Pikalo (1968, Ljubljana) studied at the Music and Ballet Conservatory Ljubljana, danced at Kazina Dance School and furthered her education at different dance seminars at home and abroad. She graduated from the international Institute for Contemporary Dance RIDC in Paris and later also finished the postgraduate programme Arts Therapy (focus: movement/dance) at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana.
Starting her professional career at the Dance Theatre Ljubljana in 1986, Petra has been working as a dancer, actor, puppet artist and choreographer ever since. She has performed in a range of productions and worked with many theatres and multimedia artists (Dance Theatre Ljubljana, En-Knap, Flota, Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana, Theatre Ana Monró, Kinetikon Association, Radio-Television Slovenia, Cankarjev dom, Emanat Institute etc.)
Petra started teaching movement and dance in 1997; first at the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory and, since its establishment in 1999, at the contemporary dance programme of the Pre-school Education, Grammar and Arts Grammar School in Ljubljana. She has received two awards for her pedagogical work at this school: the 2011 Transgeneracije Festival award (for the performance Nostalgia of Nostalgia) and the 2015 Ksenija Hribar Award for pedagogical work (collective award). In 2010 she was also awarded the Meta Vidmar Plaque for her achievements in the area of dance. She is a dance selector at the Public Fund for Cultural Activities and co-author of the national contemporary dance programme at the elementary level in the frame of music schools, which she helped prepare for the National Education Institute. A member of Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia, Kinetikon Association and Arts Therapists Association, Petra is active as a dancer, choreographer and dance pedagogue as well as a percussionist and vocalist in the poetry-music group Autodafé.
